3-Step Lateral Movement Hand Eye Sequence Drill for Goalies

Video by Director of Goaltending Development at Goalie Coaches, Rob Liddell. Follow Rob on Instagram @coachliddell

This drill is performed in a repeating sequence of three.

The goalie always starts at the far post and pushes to the center angle before turning the head and squaring up to re-adjust into the shot lane. Coach is on the dot angle in this specific video, but you can move the shot lane closer to the center angle to make the drill easier, or farther away from the center angle to further challenge/test rotational skills.

Step 1) Goalie pushes to the center angle from the far post, then readjusts into the shot lane using a shuffle and performs a lateral release (shuffle drop) into a glove/blocker save.

Step 2) Goalie pushes to the center angle from the far post, then readjusts into the shot lane using a sliding butterfly for a glove/blocker save.

Rep 3) Goalie pushes to the center angle from the far post, then drives the knees down to simulate a far pad save and readjusts into the shot lane using a down push for a glove/blocker save.

Once all three steps are completed, begin the drill again with step 1. Repeat as many rounds as desired, then perform the drill from the other side.

Goalie should be focusing on:

1) Driving the forehead and hands over to the puck, and fully squaring up to the new shot lane (pivoting) prior to moving
2) Tracking down on the puck through the forehead and shoulders
3) Making glove/blocker saves in front of the body, with no movement away from the puck
