If you’re a serious athlete, there’s a good chance you’ve already been experimenting with a variety of different supplements.

Think of it like a car. If you were driving a rusty bucket of bolts, you wouldn’t spend time worrying about which type of gas to use. If you were driving a Porsche, on the other hand, there’s a pretty good chance you’d be using a higher octane fuel.

The same goes for your body. Athletes can maximize their output by choosing the right supplements and vitamins for their sport.

For the sake of finding the best supplements, we’ll cover a wide variety here. However, know that certain supplements make more sense for certain sports.

How do I find the best supplement for me?

Choosing the right supplements will likely involve a bit of trial and error. Certain things like convenience, cost, and taste will all play a major role in whether or not you choose to use certain supplements.

For some athletes, you may just add protein powder. For others, things like creatine and pre-workouts might make more sense.

As always, please consult with a doctor or medical professional prior to taking any supplement you’re unsure of.

1. Proteins

Not all protein powders are created equal.

“Gold Standard” is a great name for a product that works well for athletes of any level. Of course, just because it’s one of the most popular proteins on the market doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Make sure you’re selecting the right quanity and the right flavor prior to purchasing. If this is your first time buying protein online, try ordering a smaller portion first until you learn whether or not you like the taste. If you’d prefer something other than the Gold Standard, I personally recommend Organic Plant Protein (more expensive, but has obvious benefits that Gold Standard cannot offer.

2. Creatine

Adding creatine to your routine is an incredibly popular way of maintaining energy during high intensity exercise (like, weightlifting).

Creatine is very safe to use and there is quite a bit of evidence that supports it’s efficiency. It increases the availability of creatine and phosphocreatine in your bodies muscles — which in turn maintains energy and builds muscle.
