3 Creative Ways To Keep Extra Goalies Engaged at Practice (and build their skills at the same time)

When it comes to coaching goalies, finding ways to entertain the second (or even third) goalie while stump even the most experienced coaches. Coaching goalies isn’t about coming up with the most creative drill or repeating the same drill a million times with no rest in between. When working with young goaltenders especially, one of the most important things to remember is keeping both goalies engaged and having FUN. This position is supposed to be fun. Keep it that way.

Regardless of what level you coach at, here are a couple drills you can implement at the next practice to keep your goaltenders both engaged in practice and spending time working on vital skills.

?: @swedenhockeyinstitute — simple pass out of the corner, nice use of the extra goalie on the pass out. If you’re working with a couple younger goalies, love it. Keep both goalies engaged in the training + work on their puck handling. If you’re working with a few older goaltenders you should be putting a strong emphasis on shot speed/ drill speed and you would probably like to use a few advanced shooters.

?: @10dtendy — Sometimes you’ve got to get creative with things. PS @pinnacle_goaltending wins the creativity award this week runner up @10dtendy with this drill. Love it. ?–> “Want to practice deflection saves, but only have one shooter but two goalies? …no problem ? Try this fun drill with your goalie partner and see who can score more top shelf ??” … IF YOU HAVE YOUNGER GOALIES ? one goalie could remain stationary in the butterfly accomplishing the same things as the video here. That way, they wouldn’t have to be doing 5 things at once and compromising to try focus on redirecting pucks and start developing bad habits.
