The thought process behind a vision training/reaction tool (and why you should make your own)

Listen, if you’re like most of the world, you probably don’t have the cash on hand (or the resources/need) to go out and spend $5k on a vision training board. If you do, good on you, you probably won’t need to read this article.
As a goalie a goalie coach, you understand the importance of vision training. You’ve probably heard of the term “head trajectory” that has been thrown around quite loosely in the past 2-4 years. Devan Dubnyk, of the Minnesota Wild, has even credited his recent success to the technique.
But, as a goalie without world-class resources, how can you build in little things like this to your practice schedule?
There is a simple tool that can be built to work on training your vision: a DIY Vision Board. Revolutionary.
The concept behind a vision board:
You’re going to need a partner for this drill. It’s a great 5 minute drill you can build into your at home practice routine–but it works best when you have somebody calling out the dots/numbers you have to cover.
In the drill, your partner stands behind you, calling out either a color or a number. When the color or number is called, you cover it with your hand. Work on a quick reaction, covering the number/color as quickly as it is called.
Please note, if you have a laser pointer, use that (see below). Your partner should point the laser at the wall, while you quickly react with your head/eyes/hand to cover the dot. It’s virtually the exact same thing as an expensive vision training board. The only caveat to this, you cannot time your reactions.
The biggest advantage a commercial vision trainer offers is the ability to time your reactions, as well as the randomness of where the dots appear.
If you do not have a laser pointer, here’s how to make your own vision training tool
Step 1: Find Space
Whether you’ve got an area set up in the basement, or a place in the garage–find a place with a wall and some space to move around. When you make the board, you have a couple options.
The first: spray painting directly on the wall. While not recommended without the expressed written consent of the homeowner (likely, your Mom), if you’ve got an area you’re training in that has a ton of room–this method works great.
Step 2: Get a white bedsheet/piece of cardboard/tagboard
It really doesn’t matter what you choose to use for the “board” itself, but the key here is if you’re not allowed to paint on the wall.. this will allow you to move it around.
Step 3: Spray paint colored dots and numbers (letters work, too)
Once completed, your board/sheet should look something like this. As mentioned, it should include both different colors and different numbers, to increase the randomness of the drill. If you’re looking for more options, add in letters.
Just like that, you’ve got your own “do it yourself vision trainer”.
If you have access to a larger wall, do this
By breaking your wall into sections, you can spend time at one section before moving to the next. You can add in a few variations to the drill using your own imagination.
Why working on your vision is important
Like we briefly covered earlier, this works best if you’ve got a laser pointer. Add a laser pointer to your bag and you’ve got a portable hand/eye warmup for practices and games anywhere. If you’ve got a little space and want to mix up your training routine at home, try the DIY vision training wall.
Working on a goaltenders vision is extremely important. When it comes to making both routine and tough saves: seeing the puck = saving the puck.
If, as a goaltender, you cannot see the puck, unfortunately you may not see as much ice time as you’d like. Goaltenders who commit to working on your hand eye coordination early and consistently, should see a drastic improvement in their on ice performance as they move up the ranks.
Remember, when it comes to training.. DESIRE > RESOURCES. Goalies who want it, goalies who are willing to go out of their way to create simple tools to work on their game and who actually commit to working on their game will see far greater success than those who do not.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full-width-section” css=”.vc_custom_1482513236664{margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-top: 28px !important;padding-bottom: 25px !important;background-color: #000000 !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Get 1 Goalie Drill Breakdown, per week, via email ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:20|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff|line_height:22px” google_fonts=”font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1482513217597{padding-top: 10px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][button type=”rd_stroke_bt” size=”medium_rd_bt” use_icon=”yes” icon_color=”#ffffff” t_color=”#ffffff” radius=”2″ font_weight=”500″ url=”https://goaliecoaches.leadpages.co/leadbox/147cbb473f72a2%3A14c696347f46dc/5709255063633920/” position=”ta_center” icon=”ion-ios7-email-outline”]SIGN UP (free)[/button][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full-width-section” css=”.vc_custom_1461013270175{margin-bottom: 0px !important;padding-top: 100px !important;padding-bottom: 100px !important;background-color: #000000 !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”23″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Our goal is to help develop goaltenders across the world by sharing tips and resources from some of the brightest minds in goalie coaching. ” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:35|text_align:center|color:%23ffffff|line_height:36px” google_fonts=”font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1482510452759{padding-top: 195px !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
