NHL Goalie Gear + Pads Tracker 2018 / 2019 Season

Another NHL season is upon us and it’s time to track the goalie gear the pros will wear during the 2018 / 2019 season. This article will focus on goalie pads worn in the NHL during this season. We’ve covered goalie mask designs for this year in a separate article.

In recent years, especially with Bauer Goalie debuting their custom graphic printing, we’ve started to see more and more NHL goalies wear gear with bolder designs.

For the purposes of this NHL gear tracker, we’ve listed each team below. Once the goalie comes out with gear, we’ll include an Instagram embed of their pads. We do write articles about pros (and non pros alike) whenever new gear is debuted, so be sure to check out our goalie gear talk articles section.

While every gear manufacturer does custom pads (in terms of specifications, etc), not every one will add a custom graphic. We’ve listed which currently offer custom graphics and which do not, below.

Bauer: Offers Custom Graphics

Brian’s / Goalies Only: Offers Custom Graphics

Vaughn Goalie: Offers Custom Graphics (though, not many current NHLers take advantage of the option)

CCM: Does NOT Offer Custom Graphics

Warrior: No current NHL goalie wears Warrior gear (Warrior does not pay an NHL licensing fee for goalie gear, on purpose)

We recommend purchasing new goalie gear from Pure Goalie.

NHL Goalie Gear Pads Tracker 2018 / 2019 Season

With just days to the official start of the season, the latest NHL goalie gear continues to show up.

Please note, we will continue to update this NHL gear tracker throughout the season. If you do not see a set here and you’d like it added, please get in touch with us!

Anaheim Ducks

Angus Redmond will wear Bauer 2X gear

Looking to get your own 2X gear? We recommend Pure Goalie.

Arizona Coyotes

Antti Raanta will wear Brian’s GNETIK IV.

Last year Raanta started out wearing the stock graphic GNETIK, before switching to a custom graphic. Time will tell whether he does the same here.

Darcy Kuemper will wear Vaughn Ventus

Kuemper has been a Vaughn goalie since he entered the league with the Minnesota Wild, so no surprise here. One thing worth noting, however, is he appears to be going with a flat face (no knee roll, which he has done previously).

And here are his, albeit way less cool, pads for jerseys that are not the Coyotes alternate.

Hunter Miska will wear Vaughn (presumably Ventus)

Miska is a goaltending prospect in the Arizona Coyotes system. He spent most of his time with the Tucson Roadrunners (AHL) during the 2017/18 season. Miska won a national championship with the Duluth Bulldogs during the one season of college hockey he played.

Carter Hutton will wear CCM Premier 2.

No surprise that Hutton sticks with the Premier 2 line, he’s worn these since his time with the Blues. He’s also sporting a new mask for the 2018/19 season, painted by Jesse’s Custom Design.

A huge fan of goalie gear, Darling is known for wearing creative colored gear and debuting it on his social media.

Chicago Blackhawks

Corey Crawford will wear CCM Premier 2.

Crawford has, like Mike Smith, wore CCM pads for quite some time. With the launch of the E Flex IV line, it’s no surprise that Smith and Crawford stick with the Premier 2. We should see the next version of the Premier pads after the 2018/19 season.

Colton Point will wear Bauer 2S.

This will be Point’s first season as a pro, coming off a successful collegiate career at Colgate University and last year’s World Junior Tournament. His Stars Bauer 2S set isn’t breaking any design barriers, but he’s been known to use Bauer’s digital printing technology to his advantage (see below) so we’ll wait and see.

Devan Dubnyk will wear Bauer 2S Gear

Dubnyk debuted a custom graphic on his gear this summer. It appears he will open the season with this graphic.

Alex Stalock will wear Vaughn VE8 gear.

Stalock wore these pads near the end of the 2017/18 season and does not appear to have changed up the graphic for his summertime skating. If he debuts a new graphic, we’ll add it to this list.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Curtis Mcelhinney will wear the new CCM EFlex 4 lineup.

Mcelhinney’s Instagram photo also shows the new streamlined NHL chest protector for the 2018 / 19 season.

Garret Sparks will wear Brian’s OPTIK

The Toronto Maple Leafs require their goalies to keep custom designs to a “dull roar”, but Sparks somehow continues to create white based designs with a ton of character. Another storyline out of Maple Leafs camp is whether they decide to keep Sparks or offer him as trade bait. The Leafs organization has been his home since he was drafted in the 7th round, so it’ll be interesting to see if they decide to keep Mcelhinney / Anderson or promote Sparks to the NHL roster.

Garret Sparks has one of the more intriguing gear collections of any goalie currently in the AHL / NHL, so if he is traded, figuring out which gear Sparks will wear next will as exciting as the next major movie launch.

It’s worth noting that these are not the new Brian’s GNETIK IV’s, but last year’s OPTIKS.

Thatcher Demko will wear Brian’s GNETIK IV.

Demko almost always switches his gear up several times per season, so it’s highly unlikely that he will opt to stay in the stock GNETIK IV graphic all season. Demko has spent the majority of his career to this point with the Utica Comets, of the AHL.
