Former Minnesota Golden Gophers goaltender Mat Robson has signed a two year, entry level contract with the Minnesota Wild. Robson arrived in the Twin Cities fresh out of the BCHL for the 2017/2018 season.
Robson took over near the end of that season and went on to start 31 games during the 2018 / 2019 campaign. Over the past three years he has posted a saves percentage of over .921, incredible numbers considering two of the years he played on a Gophers team that wasn’t exactly at the top of the Pairwise.
Mat Robson Signs 2 Year Deal With Minnesota Wild
On March 18th, 2019 Mat Robson signed a two year deal with the Minnesota Wild.
According to the Minnesota Wild website, Robson will wear number 42 with the Wild. He is expected to join the team immediately.
While the Schierhorn and Mat Robson combination was a dream come true for a coach, the Gophers lose both of these goaltenders going in to next season. Goaltender Eric Schierhorn graduated and will have every opportunity to sign a pro contract himself, and of course Robson leaves.
The Gophers have several incoming goaltenders, freshman and Jets draft pick Jared Moe, Jack LaFontaine (a University of Michigan transfer), and Justen Close who currently plays Canadien Junior A in the SJHL.
Minnesota Wild Goalie Prospects
It doesn’t take more than a close look at the Minnesota Wild organizational depth chart to realize that the Wild are short on goalie prospects. While AHLer Kaapo Kähkönen has been nothing short of amazing in his first year, the depth drops off significantly after the finnish prospect.
By signing a true pro style goaltender in Mat Robson, the Wild can be patient with the development of both Robson and Kähkönen.
For Robson, the lack of depth in the goaltending department most likely influenced his decision to sign with the team, and of course his ties to the Minneapolis area. Should he decide to finish school at the University of Minnesota, he’ll be able to do it quite easily.
Robson was a Junior with the Gophers, of course, one of our favorite parts of his game were his CCM E-Flex 4 pads.
